The month of June is the gateway to summer and, as we can see, there are particularly much news about augmented reality.
We can start with all the announcements made as part of AWE 2024 such as new glasses (XRAI), pointing devices (Doublepoint) or haptics, software developments (Snap and Niantic). Lots of new features and a very intense AWE edition. We will come back to the conferences next month.
Note also the opening of the “Meta Quest Lifestyle App Accelerator” which confirms that Meta is still convinced by the Metaverse and is now focusing on particular sectors (education is the next target). We are also seeing a new windshield proposal in augmented reality, several innovative optical proposals and announcements around VisionOS. And, of course, the news not to be missed: Augmented reality is coming to Skype 🙂
We also have some slightly more worrying news for our field and for XR in general. The announcements from Google and Microsoft have been quite chaotic in recent months, and we wonder where these two companies want to go. Another question mark is that VCs seem very cautious with XR, more so than in other areas, except for AI of course. Could this lead to a weakening of the sector? This is unlikely given the positions of the tech giants, but business models will have to change.
